Graeme Souness and Simon Jordan agree on new Sean Dyche sack verdict at Everton
Graeme Souness and Simon Jordan are in agreement over Sean Dyche being the right man to lead Everton despite a poor start to the season.
The Toffees opened the 2024/25 campaign with two disappointing defeats to Brighton and Tottenham, conceding seven goals and scoring none, before a disastrous 3-2 loss to Bournemouth at Goodison Park.
Dyche is under pressure more now than ever, especially after going 2-0 up against the Cherries before conceding three goals in the final 10 minutes of the game to taste defeat once again.
Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday (2 September, 12:53pm), Souness said: “They’re in trouble and I feel for Sean Dyche because they played some good stuff, got their goals, and then the roof collapsed on them. He’s fighting fires all over the place, trying to keep players’ heads up.
“The other things going on at that football club are not an excuse not to perform, but they’ll be alright. Last year, if they hadn’t had points deducted, they would have been sitting pretty. I believe they will turn it around and be fine.”
Jordan replied: “I don’t think there should be any doubt – I don’t why there would be any. His interview after the game was very good and very balanced. They did everything right for 87 minutes, nullifying a good Bournemouth side and making them look completely average.
“For some reason, they lost their way for seven minutes. Maybe he should have made changes but that’s a different discussion. The point is that they don’t have any money or a squad that is good enough to be near the higher end of the league. So, the expectation should be massively tempered.
Is Sean Dyche the right man for Everton?
While the instant reaction after the loss to Bournemouth was for Dyche to be sacked, the main issue with that would be around who could replace him at Goodison Park.
David Moyes has already been mooted as a potential successor, as per the Daily Mail [2 September, page 7], but the end to his tenure at West Ham should make Farhad Moshiri stay clear of the Scot.
Given the current takeover situation on Merseyside, it could be incredibly difficult to find a new manager to take over at the helm and do a better job than Dyche.
He has worked wonders since being appointed at Goodison Park, with the Toffees finishing 14 points above the dropzone despite being deducted a total of eight points due to PSR breaches.
Although fans have every right to be upset with their opening three results of the Premier League season, the Toffees are often slow starters, and with 35 games remaining, there is plenty of time to turn things around.
