Sheffield Wednesday: Verdict given on Rangers, Scott Wright transfer

FLW’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit believes that the signing of Scott Wright from Rangers could be a smart move.

According to Football Insider, the Owls have offered a contract to the 26-year-old as they look to sign the winger this summer.

It is believed that a six-figure sum could be enough to convince the Glasgow outfit to cash in on the player, who has just one year remaining on his current deal.

Wright featured 23 times in the Premiership last season, including eight times as a starter, and scored two goals as the team finished second in the table (all stats from Fbref).

Wright has been with Rangers for the last four campaigns, signing from Aberdeen in the 2021 January window.

FLW’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Callum Maxted believes that Wright could offer something different to what the club already has out wide.

He also doesn’t feel that the move could get in the way of a potential deal for Ian Poveda, amid reports of interest in re-signing the ex-Leeds United player after his loan spell in the team last season.

“He’s someone that I don’t know a whole lot about, but Rangers fans seem to be happy that he’s going,” Maxted told Football League World.

“But, again, different clubs, different chances.

“It’s a bit of a strange one, but Poveda isn’t really a winger, Poveda can play in the middle and Danny [Rohl] rotates, so having enough players in each position is probably a good thing to do.

“I think that he might be someone that could help us in those wide areas, and he might be different from what we’ve already got, so that might be why we’ve gone for him really.”

Poveda joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan last January, with just six months remaining on his Leeds contract.

The 24-year-old struggled for game time under Daniel Farke at Elland Road, leading to his temporary move to their Yorkshire rivals.

Poveda made 10 league appearances in Danny Rohl’s side, with injuries hampering him from playing more consistently.

Despite the injuries, he helped the club avoid relegation back to League One, as the team clinched a 20th-place finish in the table.

Wright signing could work for Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday won’t have the biggest budget to compete with compared to some of their Championship rivals.

So targeting an experienced top-flight player like Wright at a six-figure sum could be a reasonable use of their resources.

If Rohl wants a full squad to allow for rotation, then bringing in a versatile winger like Wright could also make sense, as he can play across the frontline, as well as predominantly on the right.

Completing the signing of Poveda is something supporters will likely want to see as a priority, but Wright coming in could also work out well for the club.
