Danny Rohl could target ‘sublime’ 21-cap star if Sheffield Wednesday can’t sign Ike Ugbo

Sheffield Wednesday are still on the hunt for a striker ahead of the 2024/25 Championship campaign.

Despite getting nine new recruits through the doors at Hillsborough, Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl is still adamant on bringing extra firepower into the ranks in attack.

Proven Championship scorer Jamal Lowe has joined up with the club, with the former Swansea City and Bournemouth striker already getting praise for his partnership with Owls fan favourite Josh Windass.

Sheffield Wednesday also captured the permanent signing of Charlie McNeill following his release from Manchester United, however it still remains uncertain as to whether he will be able to provide the immediate impact needed for a centre-forward in Rohl’s side.

As a result, Rohl is still targeting a striker he would like to bring to S6 with the likes of Ike Ugbo linked, as well as former Cardiff City striker Sory Kaba.

However, it has become clear which attackers Sheffield Wednesday are prioritising a deal for after a recent update.

Sory Kaba a back-up target for Sheffield Wednesday

The Owls are reportedly still interlocked in discussions over the futures of Ugbo, Kaba and Karamoko Dembele.

However, any attempts to bring Ugbo back to Hillsborough for the 2024/25 campaign look less likely after his hefty £4.5million price tag was revealed.

Dembele is another option they are looking at, however the former Celtic winger has many potential suitors after him this summer, therefore leaving Kaba as Sheffield Wednesday’s reported ‘back up’ option, per Darren Witcoop on X.

The Guinean striker has already staked his claim as a proven Championship goalscorer at his time with Cardiff City, where he was labelled as ‘sublime’, per Wales Online.

Can Sory Kaba provide similar attacking threat to Sheffield Wednesday target Ike Ugbo

Canadian attacker Ugbo was hotly-tipped for a return to Hillsborough, with Rohl very much keen to get a deal over the line for the former loanee who significantly contributed to Sheffield Wednesday’s survival in the 2023/24 campaign.

However, Kaba has proven to be as effective in the Championship with Cardiff City, helping them avoid the drop to League One in the 2022/23 season with eight goals in 17.

Apart from a recent spell in La Liga with Las Palmas, Kaba has consistently been able to guarantee goals at a decent level, with him also scoring in the Europa League with FC Midtjylland in the early stages of the 2022/23 season.

Kaba provides more of a physical threat in comparison to Ugbo, something that could easily be utilised alongside the likes of Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba out wide.

Rohl will have a clear plan and strategy in place for whether Ugbo makes his return or the Owls swoop in for Kaba, either way Sheffield Wednesday have done well to target two strikers who will likely perform at Championship level.
