Reported Coventry City transfer target Nicolas Madsen has spoken about his future, admitting that he’s “ready to play at a higher level” amid links to the Championship club.

The 24-year-old Danish midfielder currently plays for Belgian top flight side Westerlo but is well known to two current Sky Blues, having previously played on loan at Dutch side Heerenveen with Milan van Ewijk and prior to that was a team-mate of Victor Torp at Danish side Midtjylland.

According to reports from Belgium, the 6ft 3inches tall player, who is a box-to-box number eight by trade, able to play both an attacking or defensive role, “could leave Westerlo this summer” after being “linked to a move to Coventry in England.”

The report in Walfoot.be says of the player who scored 14 goals in 35 games last season, that: “Great performances caught the eye of Coventry City, in the Championship.”

Meanwhile, speaking in Gazet Van Antwerpen, he responded to the interest of the English club, saying: “I know that there is concrete interest from clubs in other championships. My agent is taking care of it. I am very ambitious and I think I am ready for a club at a higher level. This potential transfer will probably not be the last of my career.”

He added: “As long as I am at Westerlo, I give my best and focus on my career. The pieces of the puzzle have to fit together and the three parties have to reach an agreement. If that is not the case, there will always be the winter transfer window.”

He’s also been linked with interest from Anderlecht which, the article says, has a strong contingent of Danish players.

Commenting on that, Madsen said: “Strengthening the connection with Denmark at Anderlecht? They have to call me.”

City’s Head of Recruitment Dean Austin has been active in the European markets over the last 18 months, with Tatsuhiro Sakamoto being plucked from the Belgian top division and Van Ewijk from Heerenveen of the Ducth top flight last summer, while Dane Torp arrived from Norwegian side Sarpsborg in January.
