Mark Robins: We need to play the game not the occasion

Coventry City boss makes admission about prospect of sticking with three goalkeepers this season

Coventry city transfer news from CoventryLive as Sky Blues boss Mark Robins addresses the question over carrying three senior goalkeepers this season

Mark Robins maintains that he will continue with three senior goalkeepers at Coventry City this season, albeit with one vital caveat.

The Sky Blues boss drafted in highly-rated Sweden stopper Oliver Dovin last month and the 22-year-old has taken the No.1 shirt and looks set to start against Stoke City when the new Championship campaign gets underway this lunchtime (12.30pm).

Dovin, a £1.6m capture from Hammarby, adds competition to existing keepers Brad Collins and Ben Wilson which means one will miss out of the matchday squad. It’s unclear at this stage who will be left out and whether that signals that the writing is on the wall long-term for one of them. Certainly, from a morale perspective, it may be hard to take for whoever sits out on a regular basis.

Asked if he intends to continue with all three this season, Robins told CoventryLive: “Well, yeah. I think most squads run with three goalkeepers, which is sensible, but we have to wait to see how individuals respond to that.”

That last point is clearly the key to it, whether the one left out will be willing to stay and fight for an opportunity or ask for a move to get guaranteed first team football elsewhere.

Meanwhile, asked if any players are likely to be leaving the club in the next few weeks before the summer transfer window comes to a close at the end of the month, whether that be on permanent or loan deals, the manager simply said: “I don’t know.”
