Caleb Williams named among captains for 2024 Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears named its eight captains for the 2024 season, including rookie quarterback and No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams. The 22-year-old’s leadership has been praised by teammates throughout the preseason and training camp so it comes as no surprise that Williams is one of the voted-for leaders by his teammates.

Williams is the first rookie to earn the honor since Bears head coach Matt Eberflus arrived in 2022 and according to ESPN, it’s believed he’s the only first-year player in franchise history to be named a season-long captain since the team officially began appointing captains in 2007. Along with Williams, the other Bears captains are: Tight end Cole Kmet Tight end Marcedes Lewis Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds Linebacker T.J. Edwards Cornerback Jaylon Johnson Safety Kevin Byard Eberflus has named honorary captains each week in his first two seasons with the Bears but hasn’t said whether he would continue that tradition this year.

Eberflus called the players selected a “really good group of guys.” “I know it’s a larger group than we’re used to, but we have a bigger group of leadership now than we’ve had these couple years under our belt. And now we’ve got this third year going so I really feel strong about those guys,” Eberflus said in a statement. “They know the first rule of leadership’s leading themselves and being the example we want to see in terms of work ethic, in terms of leadership, in terms of standing up when you have to speak.” “But mostly lead by your actions. How we do things and the standards we hold each other to is so important and our best players have got to show that every single day and they’ve got to bring it. Those guys do that, and I’m excited about those guys being a big part of our leadership.”

Eberflus added Williams’ impact on the locker room at such a young age is “a really good sign.” “He’s worked his tail off. He’s preparing. He’s got great passion into practice and the games. It’ll all come to him naturally,” Eberflus said about his quarterback. Teammate DJ Moore also provided his thoughts on Williams grabbing the locker rooms attention.

“When you come to work every day like he did, and go through the things that he had to grow through, especially against the defense, and you see the work that he was putting in day in and day out, I mean you can’t do anything but respect that and want him to be a captain for you,” Moore said, via ESPN’s Courtney Cronin. The Bears open the regular season at home against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at noon.
