NL home-run leader Kyle Schwarber: Facts, figures and fun

Kyle Schwarber homers three times for the second time this season, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 10-9 comeback victory over the Toronto Blue Jays

Kyle Schwarber hit his third home run of the game, a go-ahead three-run shot in the ninth inning, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 10-9 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night after falling behind 6-1 in the first inning.

“That’s what we pride ourselves on, is just making sure that we’re never out of a game,” Schwarber said. “We always feel like we’re going to be in it and we did a really good job of that tonight.”

Schwarber started with his 12th leadoff homer of the season, added another home run in the fourth inning, and then hit his go-ahead blast with no outs in the ninth on the ninth pitch he faced from Chad Green (4-5).

His 96 mph fastball was met with a 426-foot line drive that barely cleared the fence for his 31st homer of the season.

Schwarber became the first Phillies player to hit three home runs in a game twice in a season. He ended the night 5 for 6 with six RBIs, falling just a triple short of the cycle. He also had a double in the third inning and an RBI single in the seventh.

This was Schwarber’s third career game with three home runs and his first five-hit game. His initial two homers were against Chris Bassitt.

“He carried us tonight,” said Philadelphia’s Kody Clemens.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 4 for 5 with a two-run homer for Toronto, which was ahead 6-1 after the first inning and chased Phillies starter Tyler Phillips from the game after just two-thirds of an inning.

Phillips gave up six runs on eight hits, including two-run homers by Daulton Varsho and Addison Barger.

“Even after the first inning happened, everyone’s demeanor was good,” Schwarber said. “There was no sense of defeat. Just felt like everyone had a really good attitude about it and it showed.”
