Washington Commanders name CAPTAINS for Week 1 against Tampa Bay | Coleman & Newton PLAYING👀!?! #nfl

The Washington Commanders name their team captains for Week 1

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn said he wasn’t going to name team captains in the traditional way. The team had 6 captains last year in Ron Rivera’s final season with the team. Instead Quinn will be naming team captains before each week’s game. There also won’t be any captain’s Cs on jerseys this season.

We’ll be using game captains and I’ll also utilize a group of some leaders that will be kind of with me on some decisions that or emphasis that I wanna make with the team. But, we’ll pick game captains until the postseason and then we’ll pick post-season captains. That’ll be throughout.

Washington opens up their first season under Quinn with an away game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team announced their first batch of weekly team captains today. Jeremy Reaves and Terry McLaurin were both team captains last year, and they open the season with that honor again. Dan Quinn talked about Reaves’ energy and support in the locker room. He called Terry McLaurin a pro’pro. Clelin Ferrell got the third captain spot. The veteran defensive end was signed this offseason, and Quinn called him a warrior.

The organization has started a different quarterback in each of the previous six seasons. It has traded for former high draft picks — twice. It has signed veterans. It started draft picks. Each time, there’s an attempt to explain why this time things will be different. Each time, it all ends with Washington seeking another answer at the position.

As Washington prepares for its season opener at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday (4:25 p.m. ET, Fox), it’s Jayden Daniels’ turn. The optimism, predictably, has returned, but this time it feels different.

The only one not buying into the Daniels hype is Daniels himself.

“Can’t go out there and think I’m the savior,” he said.

Still, when he steps onto the field against Tampa, he’ll be making the most anticipated first start by a Washington rookie quarterback since Robert Griffin III in 2012. Like Daniels, Griffin was the No. 2 pick and a former Heisman winner. In his debut, Griffin completed 19-of-26 passes for 320 yards and ran for 42 yards on nine carries in a win over the New Orleans Saints.
